Attorney Earl S. Carrel joined Upton & Hatfield, LLP as of counsel effective October 1, 2019. Before coming to our firm, he was a partner at Backus, Meyer & Branch in Manchester for over 19 years. He received his undergraduate and law degrees from the State University of New York at Buffalo and holds a Master of Arts in Social Science from Rivier University in New Hampshire.
Upon graduation from law school in 1973, Earl was employed by the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs. He served in the Buffalo, Manchester, and Boston regional offices, as well as the central office in Washington, D.C. where he worked as a staff attorney in Compensation and Pension Service. After leaving the VA at the end of 1985, Earl entered the private sector and developed a practice in real estate, probate, and small business law.
For over 30 years, Attorney Carrel has been deeply involved in mental health law. He has represented individuals and community mental health agencies in involuntary admissions, IEA's, guardianships, and related matters.
Prior to moving to the Monadnock Region in 2017, Earl and his wife, Patty, resided in Goffstown for 33 years. He participated in town affairs as a Trustee of Town Trust Funds and as a member of the Goffstown Capital Improvement Program (CIP) Committee. During this time, Earl also served as adjunct faculty at Southern New Hampshire University where he taught real estate and business law.
He was a long-time member of Temple Israel in Manchester and served two terms as board president. Earl was very involved with foreign student exchange programs as well; he hosted students from Panama, Brazil, Spain, and Belgium. He has also served as a foster parent.
